Greater Yellow Legs
Plum Island

Acrylic 20 x 14 on Claybord

The Plum Island reserve of Parker River NWR in Newburyport, MA. It was where my ancestors from Europe first landed in 1633 while another side of the family was already here for centuries in the same area. The Greater Yellow Legs is  a medium sized shore and back water wading bird being the  "larger of the yellow legs". It walks along and probes the mud flats with its long bill scavenging for food. The scene was a cold and blustery day late fall while on a photo expedition with a photographer friend. The foliage had already turned its fall colors. The wildlife sightings here can be quite good even on a  "bad" day. We observed and photographed geese, ducks, gulls, terns, song birds, a merlin, and harbor seals, on the sand bar at the point of the land. During winter months snowy owls are quite common and during the summer it is a nesting site for plovers. No birds? Just enjoy a stroll on the beach for shells, beach glass, the sound of the waves and the smell of the sea.
