Tree Swallows of Chincoteague
Acrylic  20 x 16 on Claybord

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge includes more than 14,000 acres of beach, dunes, marsh, and maritime forest. It provides habitat for migratory birds such as the greater snow goose,  waterfowl, wading birds, shorebirds, song birds, and even wild horses. The refuge also provides wildlife-related recreational opportunities such as fishing, wildlife photography and observation, interpretation, and environmental education.

Assateaque Island is home to Chincoteaque which spans Virginia and Maryland along the Atlantic  coastline extending north nearly to  Delaware.  One of the  estuary observation areas is well outfitted with nest boxes many of which have been claimed by the Tree Swallows. They can easily be observed flying to and from the nest boxes with food or nesting materials. The openness of the environment adds to the beauty of the Swallows iridescent blue green feathers gleaming as they weave through the air.
