Picnic Lunch
Goldfinch Pair

Acrylic 13 x 20 on Claybord

I painted this as a gift for my wife for her birthday. The sunflower is her favorite flower. She says they look so happy. What better bird than the happy little goldfinch with its "pee-wheat" call and undulating flight. They love sunflower seeds as well as thistle seed. Here in the northeast many people will plant the sunflowers first for their big sunny faced blooms and second after the bloom has past as a natural "on the stock" bird feeder. Over the course of the fall and winter the flower will be picked clean of the seed. In the image the day is crisp and clear and the female goldfinch has already perched and is awaiting imminent arrival of the male.
