Canyon Watch
Golden Eagle

Acrylic 12 x 20 on Masonite

The Golden Eagle is one of the largest birds in North America and the largest of the Eagle family. The background in the image is from some images I took while on a cross country trip. It is the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone in Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. The canyon was formed by the cutting waters of the Yellowstone River. Years of erosion have exposed the multi-colored layers of loose geology and the more solid rocky formations. I took this picture from the outlook at Inspiration Point. True to its name I was inspired to paint it however I needed an equally majestic bird. Years later when visiting the rehabilitation center, Vermont Institute of Natural  Sciences in Woodstock I spotted this female Golden Eagle on the mend. I knew she was the perfect fit for the Yellowstone  canyon. I sketched many different head positions favoring one a little less ominous looking. One of the other trials can be seen in the graphite sketch book pages. Sitting atop the canyon walls  in all its beauty commands respect. As a side note this eagle was successfully released down in the Carolina's where she most likely could find a mate.
