Night Blooming Cereus

Acrylic 18 x 24 on Masonite

This plant is actually a member of the cacti family absent the thorns. The long slender leaves hang from well traveled vine like stalks. The flower pod develops on the leaf edge on one of the lobes near the tip. It forms a large pod with pink tentacles spiraling around it. The flower of this species typically opens during the night and lasts for only one night. The flower opens to a most beautiful white bloom with a strong but very pleasant aroma that can fill a room.

People that raise these plants are very devoted to experiencing the emergence of the blooms. A friend in Vermont has a keen eye as to when the blooms will open and will call an impromptu gathering and celebration. Cheers to you Night Blooming Cereus!
