Cardinal In Apple Tree

Acrylic 11 x 14 on Claybord

The Northern Cardinal is a common feeder and backyard. visitor here in New England. The male is easily identified by its bright red feathers and black face mask, the female is striking as well with yellow olive  plumes and reddish splashes of color. They prefer flat bedded feeders to perch type. Their distinctive loud spiky call can be frequently heard as they are fiercely territorial.

This painting is the result of using two references, the bird photo was taken in a shrub in my backyard while the old apple tree is on the property of the Mass Audubon High Ledges Wildlife  Sanctuary in Shelburne MA. High Ledges can be a natural retreat for artists or authors to be inspired, with spectacular views of the Deerfield River Valley and Mt Graylock, MA's highest mountain, in the distance.
